Jay is a predominantly white town in the rural countryside of northwest Florida. In 2010, black teen Gus Benjamin attends a party in Jay, only to wind up being shot dead by a hunting rifle through his back. Robert Floyd, a young white man, is arrested and put on trial for second degree murder. The truths that emerge rip open deep wounds from the past, leading to a racial reckoning as community members are reminded of a shockingly similar shooting that took the life a black farmer almost a century before.
