Join the Volunteer Corps

Since 1858, this stage has stood because people showed up for it. Ushers, docents, and box office volunteers keep the house running for 700+ performances a year; no experience required, just a few hours and a love of live theatre.

Where you'll fit in

In many ways, volunteers are the public face of Thalian Hall, ensuring that every patron has the best possible experience. The Volunteer Corps is comprised of the following duties:

  • Usher

    Greets patrons, shows guests to their seats, and keeps the aisles moving before the curtain and at intermission.

  • Ticket Taking

    Stationed at the doors, checking tickets and welcoming the audience as the house opens.

  • Concessions

    Runs the lobby bar and snack counter, handles cash, keeps the line short, restocks between acts.

  • Opera Box Attendant

    Attends to guests seated in the historic opera boxes, offering a more hands-on hosting role.

  • VIP Lounge

    Manage premium ticket upgrades, escort guests to private seating, and coordinate perks like coat checks. They also serve pre-show drinks and organize backstage tours or cast meet-and-greets (if meet-and-greets are being offered). 

  • Docent

    Leads guided tours of the 1858 building, sharing its history as one of the oldest working theaters in America

  • Greeter

    Welcomes you at the door, checks your ticket, gives you your playbill, & points you in the direction of your seat.

  • Concierge

    Provides VIP services

  • Hospitality Support

    Attends to guests seated in the historic opera boxes, offering a more hands-on hosting role.

  • Admin Support

    Assists with will-call and phone inquiries during high-volume performance weeks.

How to join the company

From first email to opening night

01 Attend an orientation

Meet the volunteer coordinator, tour the building, and hear how each role works day to day.

First Monday of every month, 5:30 pm

02 Submit your application

Tell us which roles interest you and the shifts that fit your schedule.

03 Complete a background check

Standard screening required for all volunteers working with the public, at no cost to you.

04 Shadow a shift, then take the floor

Your first shift pairs you with an experienced volunteer before you're scheduled solo.

Common Questions

  • Is there an age requirement

    Volunteers must be 16 or older.

  • How many hours is a typical shift?

    Most front-of-house shifts run about 3 hours, covering doors-open through the top of the show or through intermission, depending on the role.

  • Do I need to commit to a set schedule?

    No, volunteers sign up for shifts as they're available. Some join weekly; others a few times a season.

  • Is there parking available?

    Volunteers can use nearby downtown Wilmington parking; details on validated lots are shared at orientation.
