Pied Piper Theatre

Historic Thalian Hall's Pied Piper Theatre continues a Wilmington tradition of introducing children to live theatre that dates back to 1949. Originally produced by the Junior League of Wilmington as series of productions, and then a troupe that toured the elementary schools of Wilmington. In 1970 with the opening of Kenan Auditorium, with Doug Swink, the founder of UNCW's Drama Department taking over as director until his retirement. In 1990, after the addition to Thalian Hall, Pied Piper Theatre found its home.

Each year Pied Piper Theatre performs for over 6,000 first and second graders from across New Hanover County at Thalian Hall. Students travel to Thalian Hall by bus and are treated to an original musical comedy featuring talent derived from the local acting community. Pied Piper Theatre is produced by the staff of Thalian Hall Center Performing Arts, Inc., with the generous support of the Landfall Foundation, the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, and many more.

At the beginning of the school year, teachers receive a synopsis of the play and a selection of songs to be taught in music classes. When the children arrive, their familiarity with the music and story helps to create an interactive environment. Each play expresses positive themes, along with a large dose of theatrical magic and laughter. For some children this may be their first exposure to live theatre.
