City of WilmingtonThe City Hall/Thalian Hall building is owned by the City of Wilmington. The City began construction on the combined "town hall and opera house" in 1856 and it has been the official seat of government since its completion in 1858. Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Inc (THCPA) operates the public portions of entire complex for the City under a management contract. The management fee paid to THCPA provides 18% of the annual operating budget. The City of Wilmington maintains offices in the City Hall for the Mayor, City Manager, and Public Information. Other City Departments are located in buildings nearby at 305 Chestnut Street and 320 Chestnut Street. The City Council Chambers on the 2nd floor is the regular meeting location for the City Council, City Planning Commission, and the Historic Preservation Commission. The Chambers also functions as the Grand Ballroom for Thalian Hall. For information regarding its use please go to our Ballroom Rental information.
